New generation FTA - how to approach it from a political economy perspective?


New generation FTA - approaching from a political economy perspective is the question and also the reason why the Faculty of Political Economics held a scientific conference on January 22, 2021 at 801, E4 building , VNU University of Economics and Business . The conference attracted a large number of scientists, lecturers, businesses and PhD students and students.

The term "New Generation Free Trade Agreement (FTA)" is used to refer to FTAs ​​with extensive and comprehensive commitments, including commitments on free trade in goods and services such as trade agreements. “Traditional FTA”; deepest commitment level (cutting taxes almost to 0%, possible roadmap); There is a strict enforcement mechanism and moreover, it covers areas that are considered "non-traditional" such as: Labor, environment, state-owned enterprises, government procurement, transparency, mechanisms investment dispute resolution.

The main speaker of the Conference is Dr. Nguyen Van Hoi (Director of the Institute for Strategic Studies, Industry and Trade Policy) and Dr. Nguyen Duc Bao (lecturer at UEB). At the workshop, through the sharing of the new generation FTA delegates, it was more open. The delegates highly valued the important value of social influence - an important factor for businesses to integrate.

Vietnam has now joined many FTAs, however, the FTAs ​​considered as the new generation are the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific (CPTPP) and the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFT. This deep integration of Vietnam has been the subject of lively discussion and research in many domestic and foreign forums. However, from the perspective of those who research, teach and students of FPE and especially from the perspective of businesses, it is necessary to have a fresh and more connected approach to security issues, with the extensive participation of businesses in the signing and implementation of these agreements, the untying and transparency of commitments to open doors, government procurement activities, etc.
